A first conversation about business insurance

Business insurance starts with how your operation works. These questions can help you describe your space, people, vehicles, and priorities to an agent.

Your operation is the starting point

A café, contractor, professional office, and retail shop may all face different day-to-day risks. Rather than starting with a list of policy names, describe what your business does, how customers interact with you, and where the work takes place. Those details give an agent a better starting point for asking relevant questions.

If you have a storefront, workspace, tools, or equipment, make a note of them. If you work at customer sites, ship products, or depend on a vehicle to serve clients, mention those activities too.

Areas worth discussing

Property: What space and items does the business rely on? Think beyond the building itself to the equipment or inventory that keeps you operating.

Liability: How do clients, customers, vendors, or the public come into contact with your work? The answer may help frame the liability discussion.

Vehicles and employees: A personal vehicle used for business, a company vehicle, or a growing team can introduce additional questions. Ask about commercial auto or workers’ compensation if either is relevant to your operation.

You can begin with the basics

You do not need every document in hand just to ask for a conversation. Explain what you do and what you want to protect. An agent can then tell you what details are needed for a quote and what coverage types may be worth exploring. Terms and availability depend on the business, policy, and insurer.
